stop skipping shampoo… your curls can tell!

One of the most common questions I get from curly clients is: “Do I really need to shampoo my curls that often?” The short answer—yes! Let’s break down why shampooing is such an important step, how often you should do it, and how to make the most out of your wash days.

For many curlies, it’s tempting to skip shampoo and simply rinse your hair with water or add conditioner between washes. While this might feel like a quick fix, it’s actually creating more problems than it solves.

When you layer conditioner on top of unwashed hair, it causes buildup on your scalp and strands. That buildup can:

  • Block hydration from penetrating your curls

  • Leave your hair looking dull

  • Prevent your styling products from doing their job

So, how often should you shampoo?

It really depends on your lifestyle, your scalp, and your hair’s needs. But here’s a good rule of thumb:

  • Every 3–4 days: Shampoo at least twice to really cleanse your scalp and remove buildup.

  • Once a week: Shampoo at least three times for a true reset and to make sure your scalp is squeaky clean.

Yes, multiple rounds of shampooing are key. The first wash lifts dirt and product, while the second (or third) ensures your scalp is thoroughly cleansed and refreshed.

Why cleansing matters

A clean scalp isn’t just about feeling fresh, it’s the foundation of healthy curls.

  • It allows better absorption of moisture

  • Promotes healthier growth

  • Creates the perfect base for your products to work their magic

Remember: cleansing your scalp is the most important step in your routine. Everything else, hydration, styling, shine, works better after a good wash.

If you’ve been skipping shampoo and relying on conditioner-only refreshes, it might be time to re-think your routine. By cleansing regularly and thoroughly, you’re giving your curls the foundation they need to thrive.
